WATCH: Did You Know Dublin Rapper Kojaque Started Out As A Lurgan Kid?

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

Summer in your teens was incomplete without a trip to the awl Gaeltacht to brush up on your Irish and get your first shift.

Over the last few years, a new trend has emerged as Irish college Lurgan released music videos as Gaeilge. Many of the videos have gone viral online, have been played on radio stations across the country and have racked up millions of views on YouTube.

I was actually a Lurgan kid myself and I was a part of one of the first music videos back in the day for a song called Seo Linn.

This Gaeilge rendition of Some Nights by Fun has gotten over a million views on YouTube. Not to be biased, but I do think it’s one of the best Lurgan has done.

If you watch this however, you might notice a familiar face on screen…

Dubin-rapper Kojaque looks (and sounds) almost completely unrecognisable but he was the lead singer of this track.

Kojaque (whose real name is Kevin Smith) hails from Cabra in Dublin. He started releasing his own music in 2015 and has gone on to be named in the NME Top 100 to watch. Last night, he took the the Longitude stage and absolutely killed it.

I saw him live at KnockanStockan last year and I have to say, out of the six festivals I attended last summer he was one of the best acts by far – such serious talent.

It’s deadly to see how far he has come since the Lurgan days.

The future is bright for this soft boy, there’s no doubt about that!
