Boseman could be the first actor ever to be nominated for two posthumous acting Oscars.
While he may mostly be remembered for his part in huge blockbusters within the MCU like Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War, Chadwick Boseman’s CV is littered with incredible performances that shouldn’t go overlooked.
From playing Jackie Robinson in 42 to James Brown in Get On Up, the late actor was an acting chameleon, capable of completely losing himself in a role, and he still had that incredible gift right up to his death at the age of 43 in August this year.
Just a few months prior to his death, Netflix released the latest Spike Lee movie Da 5 Bloods, which immediately earmarked Boseman as a potential runner for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. It looks like Netflix could be putting the actor forward again, but this time in the Best Actor category, for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Based on the play by Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson, it tells the story of a recording session in Chicago in 1927, as tensions rise between Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), her ambitious horn player (Boseman) and the white management determined to control the uncontrollable “Mother of the Blues”.
Davis is also being talked up a storm as a potential Best Actress nominee – her transformation in the trailer alone is fantastic – but if Boseman does get shortlisted, he’ll be the first person ever to be nominated posthumously for two acting Oscars.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set for release on Netflix from Friday, December 18. Check out the trailer right here:
