Produced by Martin Scorsese and starring The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby, this looks like an Oscar magnet to us.
Even before we’d seen this trailer, we’d heard about the opening act of Pieces of a Woman. The early reviews from film festivals around the world had been buzzing with a gasp-inducing opening half hour, such as this description by The Times:
“An unbroken 30-minute sequence… depicts the final labour stages, right up to the birth, with the kind of woozy, dread-inducing and pulse-quickening attention to detail that has simply never been committed to a fiction film before.”
Now, thanks to the folks at Netflix, we have our first full trailer for Pieces of a Woman, the powerful drama dealing with a couple (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby and Transformers’ Shia LaBeouf) who find their lives turned upside down when their home birth ends in tragedy.
The fallout results in a fractured relationship between husband and wife, as well as the additional involvement of his mother (Ellen Burstyn), and the midwife (Molly Parker) who they are taking to court.
The trailer alone is emotionally devastating, so we’re fully predicting to be crying our eyes out at the finished product. Plus, we should expect plenty of awards-talking around what looks like an absolutely searing performance from Kirby.
Pieces of a Woman is due for release on Netflix from Thursday, January 7.
