WATCH: This Brilliantly Nostalgic Italia ’90 Film Is Now Available Online

James Fenton

You might remember a few months back we brought you a trailer for an Irish short film entitled A Nation Holds Its Breath.

The movie premiered at the Dublin Film Festival earlier this year and any football fan, or indeed who is old enough to remember 1990, will know what the title is referring to.

It refers, of course, to the iconic words spoken by RTÉ commentator George Hamilton before Ireland’s David O’Leary scored the penalty to beat Romania and send a delirious nation into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first and only time.

The movie tells the tale of a young couple experiencing the birth of their first child against the backdrop of Packie Bonner’s save, Jack Charlton nervously puffing cigarettes, ‘Olé olé olé’ and all that.

The full film, created by Kev Cahill, is now available to watch on Vimeo and we’ve got it right here for you. Trust us, it’s completely worth 20 minutes of your day.

Let us know what you think.
