What Was On Your iPod? The 2006 Version

clodagh

Last month we brought you the 2007 version of ‘What Was On Your iPod?’ which brought back all of the memories.

This time, we’re going a little further back, to 2006.

It was the last year of Landsdowne Road before it became the Aviva, Roscommon hit the highest temperature Ireland has seen this century due to a European Heat Wave, and the Dublin Port Tunnel opened.

Not only that, but these absolute bangers were the top selling singles of that year.

1. Jumbo Breakfast Roll, Pat Shortt

Ah, yes. The mighty jumbo breakfast roll, a staple breakfast food in Ireland that was memorialised by Pat Shortt into a song. This song was number one for six weeks, and came out top in the single sales.

You have to love it.

2. Hips Don’t Lie, Shakira ft Wyclef Jean

The song that defined many a teen disco memories. Despite only spending nine weeks at number one, Shakira was out-sold by Mr. Shortt.

3. That’s My Goal, Shayne Ward

Before he was on the cobbles, he was on our radio stations – for six weeks at number one. This was his winner’s single when he won The X Factor, and the Irish people obviously had a soft spot for him.

4. Everytime We Touch, Cascada

To this day, this remains a  tune.  But it only spent two weeks at number one?! Madness I say, madness.

5. Crazy, Gnarles Barkley

Another iconic tune of our time, that only lasted a week at number one. He was robbed.

6. I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker, Sandi Thom

You can blame Sandi Thom for every wanna-be singer singing this song, non-stop. To be honest, it’s not as bad as I remember. Kind of.

7. A Moment Like This, Leona Lewis

Leona won the 2006 version of The X Factor and serenaded us for two weeks on the radio with this gorge ballad.

8. SexyBack, Justin Timberlake

It was the height of JT’s return, and he came out with this banger that stayed at the top of our charts for four measly weeks. Robbed, so he was.

9. Smack That, Akon ft Eminem

Akon was four weeks at the top with this tune that, to be honest, I think we all forgot about. Where did Akon go, anyway?

10. No Promises, Shayne Ward

Last but not least, Shayne Ward features again. It was only one week at number one, but the Irish people are obviously a big fan of his.
