What Was On Your iPod? The 2007 Version

clodagh

Cast your minds back ten years. It’s 2007: the year of low-rise jeans and waistcoats.

Leon Jackson (who?) had won the X Factor and Mary McAleese was still president.

And you were most definitely still listening to an iPod.

Before the days of Spotify, you would spend hours diligently downloading – most likely off a dodgy site – the top songs.

But can you remember them?

1. Bleeding Love – Leona Lewis

This, to this day, remains a tune. Try not to sing along with the same emotion as she does, I dare you. The ballad spent EIGHT weeks at number one. Respect.

1. Umbrella – Rihanna

No, that’s not a typo. Rihanna shares the top spot with Leona, as both songs were number one in Ireland for eight weeks that summer, just at different times.

2. Grace Kelly – Mika

This is when Mika first burst onto the Irish scene, and we were all screeching like mad trying to emulate his voice. We failed, needless to say, for the seven weeks the song was number 1.

3. The Way I Are – Timabaland feat. Keri Hilson

A forgotten classic, even though it spent five weeks at the top of the charts. I wonder what Keri’s up to now…

4. Hey There Deliliah – Plain White T’s

This song gives me nightmares. It didn’t make number one, but it infiltrated our radios nonetheless, making it one of the top-selling songs of that year. Why? Don’t ask me.

6. If That’s OK With You, Shayne Ward

Before he went on the Cobbles, he was on the X Factor, in 2005, when he won. Two years later he came out with this song, complete with a mini DJ Cammy voice.

Still dance-worthy after having spent four weeks at number one, if you don’t think about the creepy line about your mother.

7. Beautiful Girls, Sean Kingston

Another sing-along classic, but a bit cringe, really. A respectable four weeks at the top, same as previous Mr. Ward.

Also a bit of controversy around the inclusion of the word “suicidal”, leading him to release two versions of the song.

8. Girlfriend, Avril Lavigne

Ah Avril, can she ever do wrong? As stupidly pointless as this song is, you can’t help but love it.

It only lasted three weeks as number one, officially, but our hearts say differently.

9. Apologise, Timabaland remix

The origins of many a comeback to an unwanted apology, One Republic’s single was initially released in 2006, but Timabaland recorded a version for his album which was released in 2007, and voila, it became one of the biggest selling songs that year, even though it wasn’t even number one!

10. How To Save A Life, The Fray

You can blame this song for making you cry all those times when watching Grey’s Anatomy,  this song is a real emotional one.

Surprisingly, it only spent one week at number one. Underrated, in my opinion.

Special mentions:

– Beuaitful Liar, Beyoncé & Shakira

-Like Only A Woman Can, Brian McFadden

-Big Girls Don’t Cry, Fergie

All three songs above only spent one week at number one, but deserve an inclusion on the list, even if they weren’t top selling singles.
