This cross-country cycling route is a great way to see Europe

Sarah Finnan

Cycling has really taken off in recent years as one of the most popular ways to keep fit.

Not only is it a great way to stay active, but it’s also a great way to get out and do some sightseeing.

People are opting more and more for holidays that incorporate some sort of physical activity which is why this cross-country European cycling route has proven to be so popular.

Going from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Black Sea, you cycle through 10 countries and ride alongside six different rivers.

This is information I will not be sharing with my dad…who once convinced me and my brothers to cycle over 100km with him from Longford to Monaghan.

In one day.

With no training.

That was an experience, to say the least.

Called the Eurovelo 6, the route comprises mainly of dedicated bike paths or roads with very little traffic.

Some of the stunning sights along the way include the Danube Delta in Romania, the Loire Valley in France, as well as Vienna, Budapest and Belgrade.

Not for novices though as the full route is almost 4,000km long. Makes my one-day trip to Monaghan seem measly in comparison.

While better suited to more experienced cyclers and anyone looking for a challenge to work towards in the new year, you could obviously choose to tackle smaller parts at a time to make the journey more manageable.

It would be pretty cool to say that you had cycled across Europe though. Maybe I should start training…
