The IndieCork Film Festival Is Happening This Week – Here’s What You Need To Know

Sarah Finnan

Summer may be music festival season, but autumn is film festival season.

The IndieCork Festival is in full swing in the Rebel County, having launched over the weekend.

Now in its seventh year, it’s the largest short-film festival in Ireland and this year’s line-up promises to be the biggest yet.

There’s a whole list of international films on display throughout the week, including some all-exclusive world premieres.

According to festival co-director Mick Hannigan, “the festival is book-ended by two strong Irish comedies and in between, we have films from the Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, Rotterdam, Toronto and Venice festivals among others”.

Standout screenings include the debut of Lift, which tells the story of Cork woman Karen Barry and her newfound love for powerlifting, as well as new Irish film Dark Lies The Island. Written by author Kevin Barry, it stars big names the likes of Pat Shortt, Tommy Tiernan and Moe Dunford.

Arising as a platform for emerging filmmakers, the festival not only offers newbies the chance to showcase their work but keeps us all entertained of a cold dark evening as well. Winning.

Screenings take place at The Gate Cinema, with festivities running until this coming Sunday.
