Explore Éire: Did You Know You Can Go Beekeeping In Cork And Try The Local Honey?

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

No bowl of porridge in the morning is complete without a hefty dollop of honey.

It’s even better when it’s local honey.

Last year I made a trip to a beekeeping farm and ever since I’ve been a little obsessed with the idea.

There are so many amazing experiences to try on this Emerald Isle and I have to say that checking out a beekeeping farm has been one of the most informative and most interesting trips I’ve made. I spend all my days looking for cool events in Ireland and when I came across this one I couldn’t help but click into it.

Did you know you can go beekeeping in Myrtleville Co. Cork, learn all about bees and even get a free lunch that includes food homegrown on the farm?

The host, Mark, successfully completed a Masters Thesis on the issues around breeding the honeybee here in Ireland. Since then he has been working on a project called Hive Mind which hopes to build awareness for the preservation of bees.

The day will begin with a meet-and-greet; where you will run through the safety aspects of beekeeping. You’ll learn all about the honey bee, discuss what happens within the colony, the social structure and the roles each has to play within the superorganism of the hive. The importance of the honeybee to our own lives; and to the world at large cannot be underestimated.

After that, it’s time to watch the bees at work. You’ll find out what plants they are foraging.

With the help of your guide, you’ll be guided through the basic steps involved in a hive inspection.

After the beekeeping session, you’ll be given complimentary tea, coffee and lunch, including homegrown fruit and veg from Mark’s farm.

This sounds like an amazing day!

The session is 2.5 hours long and costs €50.
