Explore Éire: The Best Way To See The Connemara Coastline Is Via This Pony Tour

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

We’re fortunate enough to live in a country surrounded by sweeping vistas, stunning forests and sandy coastlines.

It can be too easy however, to spend your weekends wrapped up in a duvet with netflix and a mug of coco, especially this time of year.

It’s time to get out and explore what this stunning isle has to offer – there really is so much to see and do.

One of the most magical places in Ireland is Connemara. It’s known for its incredible national park, Gaeltacht areas and strong culture.

There’s no better way to adventure around this wonderful place than by horseback.

Horseback rides around Cleggan beach are a must. The rides are conducted by a professional riding centre with over 30 years experience and they have a variety of specially trained horses and ponies including the famous Connemara pony.

The guides are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful and each journey is unique.

The trek lasts typically for an hour and a half where you will ride past wild countryside, the crescent shaped Selerna beach along the wonderfully scenic Wild Atlantic Way.You can walk, trot, or gallop across this quiet shoreline, admiring the megalithic triple wedge tomb up on the field to the right of the beach.

Expect stunning ocean views and islands beyond before turning back along the back roads, with their many horses, cows, and sheep in the fields and the mighty Twelve Bens mountain range as its backdrop.

The trek is suitable for beginner to advanced riders, and include a short assessment before leaving with up to 2 guides.

Afterwards you’ll be invited to enjoy either a tea or coffee and a homemade Irish scone with clotted cream and jam or a delicious Irish Coffee at a local village pub.

Sounds like the dream!
