Explore Éire: This 19th Century Church Has Been Transformed Into A Funky Airbnb

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

I don’t know about you, but the idea of sleeping overnight in a church kind of freaks me out.

Well, at least the idea did until I came across I came across the stunning Guilcagh Church.

Welcome to Explore Éire, a weekly series that gives you the inside scoop on the hottest things to do, places to see and stay across the country.

Think of it as the ultimate staycation guide for Irish adventures who want to take a trip and explore what this country has to offer.

Guilcagh Church can be found in Portlaw, Co. Waterford.

It is the height of tranquility, located in a quiet area surrounded by lime trees.

Inside, it’s nothing like you’d expect, it’s bright, colourful and very modern. It still has the gothic architecture, stained glass windows and angels on wall frames.

The best of both worlds.

The venue has two bedrooms and can host up to six guests.

Situated off the upstairs balcony is a large double bedroom and ensuite with a private stairs. Downstairs hosts another double bedroom with queen bed.

It’s got a real charm to it, very eclectic.

Though churches are often cold, this spot is super cosy. There’s a large stove, underfloor heating and magnificent chandeliers dominating the space leading up to the curved balcony with a wooden spiral stairs that overlooks the pulpit.

Such a unique destination for a staycation in Ireland.

The alter of the church has been converted into a bright kitchen that oozes atmosphere.

The church is also very close to the town and local amenities. There’s an incredible forest nearby to explore along with the opportunity to pony trek, walk the Waterford Greenway or around the gardens of Mount Congreve Estate.

This would be the ideal treat for a Halloween break getaway.

Time to get booking!
