GINFLUENCED: Mór Irish Gin Is Ideal For An Adventurous Palette

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

It’s Tuesday, which can only mean one thing…

It’s the shittest day of the week.

You know I’m right, every other day has… something.

Monday – first of the new week, Wednesday – hump day, Thursday – only a day left to.. FRIDAY = weekend.

See what I mean?

Well, I’m here to make your Tuesday a whole lot better.

Tuesday will now become “try a new gin” day.

So I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, it’s time for our weekly feature – GINFLUENCED.

Each week I’ll be chatting about an Irish gin brand, showcasing the product from the bottle to botanicals and having a little tasting, of course!

It’s time to expand your gin knowledge. Next time you’re ordering an icy goblet of gin, or maybe even hitting the offo, why pick out something new?

This week I’m going to be sharing with you one of my fave gins EVER – Mór Irish Gin.

Mór Irish Gin was one of the very first craft gins I ever tried and it’s really the whole thing that sparked my interest. It was so different in flavour from my usual Gordon’s or Cork Dry Gin that I had been drinking since I was a teen.

Way back when, before I worked for Lovin, my friend Alana who used to work here brought me along to an event with her. The event was for the launch of Mór Irish Gin, it gave me a taster for what working for this company good be like. Being very first Lovin event, this gin holds a special place in my heart.

Mór is handmade in the Arderin Distillery in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, and comes in small batches. It’s flavour takes inspiration from this area – earthy and botanical.

It’s advertised as a gin for the “adventurous spirit” as it takes a step away from the appearance and flavours of a conventional gin.

My boyfriend bought me a bottle of Mór for my last birthday and I genuinely think it’s one of my favourite gifts I received – something we can enjoy together on special occasions.

The Bottle:

At a first glance, this bottle looks pretty simple.

A round bottle with a cork top and white label that wraps around like a ribbon from front to back.

Through the glass you can see on the other side of the label is beautifully illustrated floral patterns that reflect through the bottle.

On the bottom of the label you’ll find the gins batch number and bottle number, which I adore – it just makes it seem so special.

Background:

Created by young entrepreneur, Eoin Bara, Mór was always destined for success. Bara came from a background of drink enthusiasts. His grandfather distilled for Tullamore Dew, so he grew up learning the tricks of the trade.

When the gin began, it was as a side project to distract him from the monotony of working life. Bara’s dad would bottle the spirit and his mother would apply the labels.

The entrepreneur began in IT where he ran a very successful company but his interest in gin sparked a new way of life. He left his job in IT and travelled around the world for six months, expanding his knowledge on the craft of the spirit.

He wanted to take inspiration from his own area when creating the gin so he decided to use the same spring water from the Slieve Bloom mountains that is used in Tullamore Dew.

This water is pumped directly from the mountains by Eoin and his crew.

It’s targeted those who want a unique gin experience, not your run of the mill product, so it is a little pricier.

Botanicals:

  • Juniper
  • Angelica
  • Coriander
  • Rosemary
  • Blackberry
  • Raspberry
  • Cranberry

The juniper is very prominent but it has there’s a distinctive and unique flavour produced by the three berries used. It’s sweet and fresh.

If you like a mixture of botanicals and fruity flavours, this gin would be right up your street.

On the nose:

At first, you’ll get that typical earthy and botanical smell followed by subtle florals and vivid raspberry notes.

It’s a sweeter and fresher smell than your usual gin.

Straight:

The sharp sweetness of Juniper is the first thing to hit the palette.

The angelica root and citrus sharpness of coriander soon take over.

With Tonic:

Mix with Lavender & Orange Blossom tonic from Schweppes premium mixer range.

The floral undertones in this tonic make it the perfect accompaniment to dry gins. A gin & tonic with a floral slant, releasing its full finesse.
