‘Best unsolicited DM I’ve ever received’ – childhood book brings generations together

The type of wholesome story we all need of a post-bank holiday Tuesday.

If you grew up reading Jacqueline Wilson, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl and all the other greats, you probably remember scribing your name (and your address followed by “Ireland, The World, THE UNIVERSE” if you were feeling extra) inside the front cover.

During clear outs, house moves and growing up in general, many of us end up being inevitably separated from our childhood book collection, but this Irish Twitter user ended up being reunited with hers through the magic of social media.

Jess Mehmet shared a DM she received over the weekend, sent on behalf of a seven year old who’d came across her copy of The Famous Five – Five go off in a Caravan via a charity shop in Schull, Cork. After seeing Jess’s name written on the inside of the book, she wanted to get in touch and ask her a few questions.

Jess shared the dm on Twitter, which reads:

Hi Jessica, my seven year old daughter was given her first Famous Five book recently. The book has the name Jessica Mehmet written on the inside cover… so we thought it would be fun to look you up!

Sure enough, Jessica’s name is written inside the cover – the glittery gel pen deserves an honourable mention too. The new owner of the book had a series of questions to ask, including how many Famous Fives Jessica had read, which was her favourite, and what her favourite toy was growing up.

A great reminder to pass on any childhood books you’re getting rid of to your local charity shop, so they can enjoy a whole new life with the future generation of little readers!
