There are a lot of things we’re all missing these days – a meal out at one of our fave restaurants definitely amongst them.
Life feels as though it’s all doom and gloom lately and sometimes it’s easier to see the glass as half empty than half full… but there is a certain sense of unity in knowing that we’re all riding the same rollercoaster of emotions together.
Starting a conversation online about things we miss, Derry Girls star Siobhán McSweeney got the ball rolling by saying it’s restaurants for her.
“I miss restaurants. Not any place fancy. Just restaurants. Waiters. Different salt and peppers. The second cheapest wine.
“Can we just have a look at the dessert menu. Ordering anything that has rhubarb in it. The pretend refusal to order the 2nd bottle. The TMI. The bread baskets.”
Oh, the bread baskets. She really hit the nail on the head with that one, didn’t she?
Setting us all off down memory lane, others have heightened the nostalgia by adding to the above. According to one:
“All of that, including the rhubarb. The anticipation of a great meal served, the pre dinner drink, cheese boards, good coffee. An old fashioned G&T in a normal glass in The Crane after a meal in @kaigalway.”
Looking at your neighbours' plates to see what you might like. That excited feeling when you realise that its YOUR food coming your way! (BTW the 2nd cheapest wine often has the most markup, go for the cheapest or middle. You'll get better wine for your money!)

All of that, but most of all the banter and the laughter- the proper, shouts, tears pouring down your face laughter that comes from catching up with good friends you haven’t seen in a while. Cheers to those days again- hopefully sooner than later 🍸

I felt this. And the cold butter they serve with the bread baskets. Can we get back to that? https://t.co/L6oYtkxZl9

I miss customers. The regular ones. But the first timers too. Gossip. Are there shells on the prawns? I have something new from Puglia you’d like. It was terrible, can I send it back. Singing happy birthday. Irish coffees. Shur we might as well stay for breakfast now. Soon. https://t.co/9LZTJyd3gx

My own personal miss list includes hugging (human! contact!), the sun (can’t really blame the Irish weather on the pandemic… but I’m going to anyway), travelling farther than 5km and, of course, my friends and family who I’ve gone far too long without seeing. Restaurants too, but I think that goes without saying given how often I blather on about food.
