Heads Up – You Can Go On A ‘Food Safari’ In The Boyne Valley This Summer

Sarah

As if we weren’t looking forward to summer craic already (we’re all in agreement that was the longest winter of all time, yeah?), the news that the Boyne Valley Food Series is kicking off again has us feeling all fluttery.

The food series events runs from March-December and is a jam-packed calendar of events which celebrates the yum produce of the Meath and Louth area.

For real, we’re drooling just looking at what’s coming up for the summer – BBQs, cider tastings at farms, fish festivals – but it’s the Food Safaris that have caught our eye.

There’s two different Food Safari events to choose from, and they both sound like a dream…

The Louth Food Safari is on Friday 18 May (€70):

11am: Meeting at Monasterboice Inn for greeting, morning canapés & itinerary.

11.30am: Walk up the farm to view our cattle grazing & talk on husbandry by Joe O’ Reilly.

12.30pm: Board bus & travel to Stagrennan Farm for Orchard walk by kind permission of Olan McNeece, who will explain the year of the orchard, cider & Dan Kelly tasting.

2pm: Travel to Coastguard Smoke House, for explanation of the process of smoking fresh seafood, kindly given by Terry Butterly. Refreshments will be served in the garden.

3.30pm: Travel to view Eoghan McGiolla Coda’s bee hives, where Eoghan will talk on the life & work of the native Irish Honey Bee & Lannléire award winning honey.

5pm: Return to Monasterboice Inn to enjoy a delicious dinner of all of the above.

And the Meath Food Safari will be on Saturday 23 June (€40):

Morning Workshop 10am-12 noon – Free Range and Organics – with Wood fired Lunch and an Afternoon Workshop. The Meath Food Safari is a guided bus tour of four artisan food producers and their farms.

Customers will meet the producers, taste their food and see how it is made. You’ll visit: • The Whole Hogg • The Cider Mill Slane • Boyne Valley Farmhouse Cheese • Newgrange Gold Oils • Boyles of Slane

You’ll taste chorizo, drink fresh goat milk and see how the cheese is made, do a cider tasting, get a tour of the rapeseed oil factory and finish it off with a BBQ in the pub using all of the ingredients from the tour.
