Irish Made: This Irish Woman Creates Art On Tiles And They’re Stunning

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

I’m going to be real with you – working in Lovin, you get a lot of press drops.

Starting off, it was the one of the most exciting things about my job. I’d come home every evening and my two housemates would jump off their seats asking, “What did you get today?!” I’m here two years now and though I really appreciate every drop I get, I sometimes open them and then without much thought, put them under my desk where they stay for a week or two.

Sometimes however, I get ones that make me stop what I’m doing, take my eyes away from my article and take a moment to really look at every detail. My latest gift was exactly that.

Alanna Plekkenpol creates art out of tiles.

Alanna‘s dual Dutch/Irish heritage is the inspiration behind these unique artworks that are sure to be a talking point in any room.
She launched her eponymous brand in 2016 and her designs combine elements of traditional Dutch Delft blue and her own signature style of illustration. The texture of the humble glossy ceramic tile forms the base on which she creates her designs – continuing the Dutch tradition of storytelling through tiles.
The decorative tiles are available as unframed and framed wall art.

Alanna’s work has received awards, including ‘Highly Commended in the Home Category’ at the Showcase Awards 2018 and the Future Makers Overall Award in 2015. In 2019, Alanna was selected to join the highly competitive Design Ireland program run by the DCCoI (Design and Craft’s Council of Ireland).
The pieces are playfully illustrated digitally and hand finished in Bray, Co. Wicklow.
They are so stunning – such a great idea for a gift!
Prices range from €40- €185 and you can get them in Kilkenny Design.
