‘Slugging’ Is A Slimy New Activity That Has The Internet Going Crazy

Darragh Berry

This is going to be one of those posts that will make you say, ‘that’s enough internet for the day.’

We love our 21st century trends as much as the next person but this one is probably the most bizarre one yet.

People on Reddit have been talking frantically about the art of ‘slugging’ which means smothering yourself in Vaseline before you go to sleep to make your face as slick and shiny as a slug that you’d find in your garden.

Those who discussed the new beauty craze on the site said that it left their skin feeling super soft, plumped and clear.

Unlike applying makeup, there’s no exact technique, you just apply as much Vaseline on your face as you want after your normal skincare routine and after you have moisturised your face.

This can’t be good for your skin, one would think?

Well, speaking to Metro, dermatologist Dr Adam Friedmann believes that slugging is the ideal way to moisturise at night without clogging your pores.

“Vaseline at night time is great for soft skin in the morning. The skin absorbs the oil and becomes softer and less wrinkled. Applying a moisturiser will help the skin look softer and plump, therefore reducing the appearance of wrinkles, and helping the skin look younger.

“I tend to favour greasy heavy moisturises like Vaseline before bed and lighter moisturisers in the morning.

However, another dermatologist told the publication that they would not recommend slugging in any way, shape or form.

“We never recommend petroleum based or derived products to be applied to the face. If you have specific skin issues such as pigmentation, blemishes, or dryness, you’ll likely be much better off using a product with active ingredients to tackle these issues, such as a specialist serum, acid toner, or moisturiser, rather than sealing off your skin with Vaseline.”

Would you give this beauty trend a go? Or are you prepared to wreck your bed sheets for something like this?
