Great Blasket Island

Grabbing the attention of people the world over, more than 40,000 applications were received for the unique position to manage accommodation on the Great Blasket Island last year.

You may remember that the same job was advertised around this time last year. Well,  the role turned out to be so popular that Billy O’Connor and his partner Alice Hayes have decided to recruit for it once again.

The owners of three cottages and a coffee shop on the island, the couple garnered huge public interest in a job advertisement they put up last year. Recruiting for two summer caretaker jobs on the Great Blasket island, over 40,000 applications were made for the unique position.

Proving to be of huge interest to the public, the couple has been inundated with requests about the job with the duo deciding to recruit for the role once again this year. Originally intent on asking a foreign couple they know to take on the job, Covid travel restrictions have scarpered these plans with Mr O’Connor telling the Irish Examiner that they will be advertising for the role this week.

“We are going to post the jobs up again on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram this week with a link to the application form and a frequently asked questions section.

“We’ve decided to add some job criteria as last year when we started to receive applications it took us a month just to get through them. It’s absolutely fantastic that so many people want to come here but many didn’t realise what the living conditions are like.”

Located three miles off the coast of Dingle in Co Kerry, the island is home to a huge amount of local wildlife, however, applicants should note that there is no hot running water or electricity.
