This Is How Much Weight The Average Irish Adult Will Put On Over Christmas

James Fenton

We’re all looking forward to a hard-earned Christmas break but if new research is to be believed we could all be rolling back into the office in January.

Stuffing our faces with turkey, pudding and knocking back a few drinks is one of the best parts of the festive season but it all adds up and the results don’t sound good. According to Safefood Ireland, as quoted in the Irish Independent, the average Irish adult can expect to put on half a stone over Yuletide.

Spokesperson Joana da Silva warned that Christmas Day is the most dangerous of all with adults expected to take in 6,000 calories – three times the recommended daily amount. She added that alcohol plays a big part on festive nights out, saying “The average adult in Ireland will put on about half a stone over the Christmas period, and a lot of that weight gain is due to the extra drink that is consumed, because people go out more at this time of year.”

On the bright side, Joana said “We are certainly not here to ruin people’s Christmas. It’s very important that people enjoy themselves but there are far more temptations around when it comes to food and drink at this time of year.”

Everything in moderation, eh?
