TV Pick – This Underrated Action Movie Starring Matt Damon Airs On Irish TV Tonight

Lovin' Media

Since pretty much everyone will be watching the penultimate episode of Game Of Thrones tonight, we thought we’d take pity on the three people out there who aren’t fans and maybe suggest something else to watch.

Tonight, we recommend you curl up with a hot cup of tea and the 2013 sci-fi action flick Elysium. Set in the near-future, the films depicts a world in which the vast majority of humanity lives in abject poverty on the surface of the Earth while the wealthy elite lives high above the planet in the titular space station, which is a craft so technologically advanced that it’s basically paradise.

(As far as futuristic escapism goes, this actually doesn’t sound a million miles away from reality…)

Matt Damon stars Max De Costa – former thief and current shaven-headed factory worker – who finds himself in a spot of bother when a work accident leaves him with a nasty dose of radiation poisoning and just five days to live. Not ideal.

However, if he can somehow manage to break into the hi-tech Elysium with the help of his former criminal associates, he might be able to use its technology to save his life.

More problems arise for our hero when he falls foul of a sociopathic businesswoman (Jodie Foster) and the demented bounty hunter on his trail (Sharlto Copley).

While director Neill Blomkamp was applauded for his debut film District 9, this follow-up left critics and audiences strangely cold in comparison. That said, any action movie starring Matt Damon is definitely worth a gawk.

Elysium airs at 9.30pm on TG4. Check out the trailer below for a taste of what to expect.
