A woman and girl have been found alive after 15 hours in the water off the coast of Galway.

RTE News reports that a local fisherman found the woman and girl clinging to a lobster pot. A major search operation was launched after the pair, who set out on stand-up paddleboards, failed to return to shore yesterday evening. The alarm was raised at around 10pm when they failed to return.

The woman (23) and girl (17) are believed to have survived 15 hours in the water. Hundreds of volunteers had helped in the search effort, along with the coastguard and lifeboats.

A statement by the Irish Coast Guard Coordination centre at Valentia this morning said that it is “currently coordinating an extensive search of Galway Bay, after two females aged 17 and 23 who were paddleboarding at the time were reported overdue last night at 10:05pm just off Furbo, Co. Galway.”
