Still with 118 branches across the UK, all remaining Debenhams stores are to close as part of the sale.

Fast fashion retailer Boohoo has bought Debenhams for €62million (£55million) will all stores to permanently close as part of the deal. It’s believed that Debenhams products will be sold by Boohoo from early next year, allowing enough time for liquidators to close the retailer’s sites in the meantime.

Announcing intentions to “rebuild” and “relaunch” the Debenhams platform, Boohoo has said that the sale will help them to grow into other areas of online shopping – including beauty, sport and homeware.

However, with all stores set to close, the sale now leaves more than 10,ooo staff facing redundancy. Speaking on Sky News, joint administrator Geoff Rowley commented:

“We are pleased to have secured the future for this great brand, and to have created the opportunity for a new Debenhams-branded business to emerge in a different shape beyond the pandemic.

“I expect that the agreement with Boohoo may provide some job opportunities but we regret that this outcome does not safeguard the jobs of Debenhams’ employees beyond the winding down period.”

Debenhams previously operated 11 stores throughout Ireland with branches in Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Limerick, Waterford, Galway and Kerry.
