A large Garda presence has remained outside a home at Woodquay in Galway city centre since midday today as a major operation unfolds.
According to Galway Bay FM, a large number of armed and uniformed Garda members, an ambulance and two ambulance crews have closed off the street at St Brendan’s Avenue and have been there since noon. Gardaí are currently setting up lighting in the area, indicating that the operation may continue throughout the night.
The operation is believed to be focused on a single house on the road, with a barricade surrounding it in place.
It’s understood that a young man has barricaded himself into the house – local Gardaí are concerned for his welfare.
More as we have it.
