Search teams have located the wreckage of the Rescue 116 helicopter which crashed off the Mayo coast last week.
It’s said to be a significant development in locating missing crew members Captain Mark Duffy, winch operator Paul Ormsby and winchman Ciaran Smith.
Jurgen Whyte of the Air Accident Investigation Unit told RTE News:
“We have located the main part of the wreckage which is the helicopter itself. It’s just now a matter of getting a weather window to work our way through the wreckage and hopefully we’ll be able to recover the three crew.”
Captain Dara Fitzpatrick was the fourth crew member on board the ill-fated helicopter. Her body was recovered on the day of the crash and her funeral took place on Saturday.
