The search for missing Mayo GAA star David Gavin has been called off in Canada, with police saying he is now presumed drowned.

The 26-year-old was last seen when he dived off a bridge in British Columbia on Friday and Independent.ie is reporting tonight that the decision has been made to scale down attempts to locate the Irish man.

A spokesperson told the website that "periodic flyovers" would continue over the course of the summer in the hope of recovering his body.

Gavin is originally from Castlebar and began playing for a Gaelic football club in recent weeks.
