PIC: Controversial Front Page Of This Week’s Catholic Herald Reacts To Referendum Being Passed

Darragh Berry

Tomorrow, the first day of June represents exactly a week since Ireland came out to vote on whether to repeal the Eighth Amendment or not.

The vote was passed with a resounding ‘yes’ vote of 66.4% with each county voting in favour of repealing the Eighth Amendment except Donegal who voted no by 51.87%.

Well, this week’s edition of the Catholic Herald is released on 1 June also and the front page is going to be hitting headlines tomorrow, that is for sure.

The front page is plainish enough with its half-white background but the message they want to portray is clear…

The front page shows the Grim Reaper with a map of Ireland and the caption “Ireland Has Fallen”.

Catholic Herald’s columnist, Jon Anderson will be analysing “a devastating referendum result” in this week’s’ issue.

His article titled: “Ireland embrace abortion”, can be found online here.

It comes exactly in the same week that the Bishop of Elphin hit headlines on Monday morning after he said those who voted yes in the recent referendum on the Eighth Amendment had sinned and needed to go to confession.

The Bishop’s comments were met with a classy and 21st century response in the evening by Priest Fr. Brian D’Arcy.

As well as this, ‘yes’ voters were told in this parish that they “weren’t welcome” at mass on Sunday.
