TD’s have returned to the Dáil today after their summer recess, some 68 days after they left.
That is some holiday. They did have a few more days than usual as the Dáil Chamber was getting a revamp, but still!
However, the world is a very different place since they last sat in the Chamber. So what has happened in the world in the last 68 days?
Brangelina Split
In what will probably be considered the biggest tragedy of 2016, the TDs missed the demise of a Hollywood power couple. Bet they are all devastated.
Steven Avery Got Engaged
The Making A Murderer star had some great news – he got engaged to a woman named Lynn Hartman! Lynn is a legal secretary and he has only met her once.
The pair have been dating for nearly eight months, but only recently met face-to-face for the first time. Love at first sight so…
Dublin Bus Strikes
TDs missed the bus strikes, the lucky things! Although we don’t think Enda gets the bus to work … but you never know!
Electric Picnic
It was probably a good thing that the TDs were on their holidays during the festival, gives them a chance to head down to Stradbally, and let their hair down. Just hope they had a good pair of wellies!
Presidential Debate
They missed the debate of a lifetime between presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. This tweet accurately sums it up.
Apple Tax
Now in the interest of fairness, they did meet briefly during their recess to discuss the Apple Tax debacle.
The Dáil voted 93 votes to 36 to appeal the ruling by the European Commission that the tech giant should pay €13 billion in back taxes. Great news there so.
GAA Controversy
These finals have been hugely controversial and the Dáil missed it all!
With the extra time, and subsequent draw between Mayo and Dublin, and the contested point between Cork and Dublin’s ladies, it has been a hell of a few weeks for the GAA.
Olympics and Paralympics
The Olympics began on August 5, with the Paralympics closing up this years festivities on September 18.
The TDs missed it all – Phelps smashing more records, the Ryan Lochte trouble, Simone Biles officially being named Queen of Gymnastics, Annalise Murphy absolutely blowing the competition away, Michael Conlon’s boxing controversy and Jason Smyth defending his title as the fastest Paralympian on the planet, just to name a few!

O’Donovan Brothers
You hardly think we would forget these two? They deserved their own section.
They have shown incredible athletic skill and entertained us and the world, all at the same time. These two Cork brothers stole the show this summer. Shame the TDs missed it!

Gogglebox Ireland
They missed the birth a household name. They missed the Cavan twins standing to attention for the National Anthem. They missed Michael Tea Higgins for Christ’s sake!
They’ve only two weeks to get the budget out, so we hope they are well rested after their holiday.
