Galway Students Arrested For Drug Dealing Remind Judge Of ‘Breaking Bad’

Sarah

Students at NUIG in Galway are funding their way through college by dealing drugs, according to Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court.

The Connacht Tribune reports that three NUIG students were arrested on separate and unrelated drug dealing charges all appeared before court on the same day, pleading guilty.

Judge Fahy said that “it reminds me of ‘Breaking Bad’,” after hearing evidence from one student, Sean Curran (21) a chemistry student who pleaded guilty to being found in possession of cannabis, Ecstasy and Ketamine.

He received a six-month prison sentence with leave to appeal.

Fintan Canavan (22), studying mechanical engineering, was also sentenced to a six-month stint in prison after pleading guilty to having €4,080 worth of cannabis for sale or supply in March 2016.

“Well, isn’t that embarrassing?  How many students from NUIG were in here today?” Judge Fahy asked and was told it’s a “growing trend” for students to deal drugs.

A law graduate, Jack McDonnell (23) was also arrested after he signed for a postal package containing €1,936 worth of cannabis in May 2016.

Customs officials had alerted the Gardai to the package and they were ready at the address when the package arrived.

Mr McDonnell’s case has been adjourned to next week as Judge Fahy said she needs testimonials and proof that he was still in college before she could properly consider the case.
