Gardaí fine motorist who traveled 100km on a non-essential journey

James Fenton

Gardaí have revealed more details of fixed charge notices that have been issued to people for breaching 5km Covid-19 restrictions in recent days.

The fixed charge of €100 was introduced last Monday and since then, 400 fines have been issued with 300 of those being handed out across the weekend. Under current Covid-19 measures, people are asked to only travel more than 5km from home if their journey is essential, however Gardaí have found a number of motorists doing so for non-essential reasons, including one trio last week who drove 80km “for a burger“.

Gardaí in Kildare have now confirmed that another motorist was found to be travelling 100km on a non-essential journey and they have now been issued with a €100 fixed charge.

Current Covid-19 measures are scheduled to remain in place until the end of January. You can find more details on journeys that the Government deem essential via this link.
