Gardaí have set up checkpoints around the three lockdown counties

James Fenton

Gardaí have today set up checkpoints are the counties of Kildare, Offaly and Laois to ensure that members of the public are adhering to the restrictions announced last night.

It was confirmed on Friday evening that Kildare, Offaly and Laois will face new restrictions on movement after recent spikes of Covid-19 in the counties. Those living in the area are asked not to leave their respective counties except for essential purposes which are outlined here. Meanwhile, those outside the three counties are asked not to enter for the next two weeks.

To ensure that the public is adhering to the new restrictions, Gardaí have set up a number of checkpoints, in much the same way that they did when national coronavirus restrictions were introduced back in March.

The below pictures show Gardaí checking with motorists at the Kildare/Carlow border as well as in Tullamore earlier today…

It should be noted that people are allowed to drive through these counties as long they only stop for essential reasons. As for those living in the counties, the Government states that you can ‘undertake one initial journey either into or out of the counties specified for the purposes of returning home from vacation.’
