Back to school is an exciting time, but it’s important to stay safe.

It’s officially back to school season, a time met with equal measures of excitement and dread. I think we can all remember being forced into our school uniform and having to get countless pictures with our siblings ahead of a new term, and while this should be harmless and for memories only, Garda Síochaná have warned parents about this behaviour.

While they are in no way telling parents not to take photos of their children, they are encouraging cyber safety when sharing these images online. With that in mind, here’s a few tips Garda Síochaná recommend implementing when sharing back to school photos.

Garda Síochaná guidance when sharing back to school photos online

  • Blur the school or team logo on their jumper
  • Turn off location data on your phone
  • Blur out any identifying information (for example on school bags, homework journals, etc)
  • If taking a picture outside of your front door, blur or crop the number out

This advice comes from the National Cyber Crime Bureau with children’s safety in mind.
