Listeners were emotional this morning as they heard the voice of the late broadcaster Gerry Ryan on the radio this morning.
On an hour-long segment hosted by Ryan’s daughter Lottie, Ryan’s voice was featured on 2fm to celebrate 40 years of the station.
In this morning’s segment, which aired from 9am until 10am, Ryan spoke about his beginnings at RTÉ
Ryan began as a DJ at RTÉ in 1979 and brought The Gerry Ryan Show to RTÉ Radio in March 1988.
Perhaps the most memorable part of his career was when he interviewed Lavinia Kerwick, who was the first rape victim to go public with her case in 1993. After her attacker was given a suspended sentence, she rang the Gerry Ryan Show and then appeared on the show soon after and Ryan was applauded for how he handled the story.
Ryan passed away suddenly in April 2010, and fans seemed happy to have his voice back on the air.
One Twitter user wrote, “The @RTE2fm anniversary special of the Gerry Ryan Show was a superb piece of radio. Congratulations to all involved in its production.
No one can come close to the legend that is Gerry Ryan.”
