In the glorious early days of internet memes, we all had the same favourite relatable feline. Grumpy Cat, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, was a cat of the people. She was truly an internet legend.
Unfortunately, news just broke the beloved cat has died aged seven.
A statement released on Grumpy Cat’s official Twitter account announced her passing earlier today.
“We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat,” the statement read.
“Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy Cat encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome. She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.”

“Besides being our baby and a cherished memory of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough.
“Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere,” the statement added.
Grumpy Cat was one of the original memes of the internet when memes were just becoming a thing. Everyone remembers the glorious days of Grumpy Cat, Bad Luck Brian and Overly Attached Girlfriend.
She went viral in 2012 after photos of her sour expression emerged online.
In 2015, Madame Tussauds in San Francisco unveiled a waxwork of the internet star.
