He’s only in South America five minutes and already the locals are taking Mikey D to their hearts
President Michael D. Higgins is set to be awarded ‘The Order Of The Sun’, the highest honour awarded in Peru.
El Presidente set off on on a 12 day tour of Latin America on Tuesday, starting off in the Peruvian capital of Lima before taking in Colombia and Cuba. He is set to land back in Dublin on Sunday February 19.

Among the activities Higgins is scheduled to undertake is a visit to the tombs of Ambrosio O’Higgins, a Sligo native who was once leader of Peru, and his son Bernardo O’Higgins who went on to be a Chilean independence leader.
Presumably the lads are all related by the Higgins family tree somewhere along the line.
