“Candles may be seen as a cheap alternative to putting the heating on but can significantly increase the risk of fire if not used safely.”

Ecclesiastical Insurance has growing concerns about the TikTok candle craze whereby people are heating and lighting their homes with candles in Ireland. Given the current energy crisis, many Irish people are looking for alternatives when it comes to lighting their homes.

Head of Risk Services at Ecclesiastical Insurance Ireland, Paul Collins, says this of the trend:

The cost-of-living crisis has meant many of us are looking at our energy usage and trying to find ways to save money.

“Candles can create a cosy atmosphere in the home, and are used in many of the historic churches and heritage properties we insure – whether as part of regular services, candlelit concerts, tours or screenings.

“Enjoying them safely is the most important thing. Our advice would be to avoid following viral cost cutting trends and instead to look at more effective, lower risk ways to heat your home this winter such as improving insulation.”

In light of this, Ecclesiastical Insurance has provided a list of safety measures when using candles in the home.

  • Make sure candles are on a heat resistant surface in proper candle holders
  • Kept clear of flammable materials such as upholstery and curtains
  • Don’t leave them lit and unsupervised and don’t move them when lit
  • Make sure there is still adequate lighting in the area they are used to support safe movement around the property
  • Store candles securely when not being used
  • Consider using LED, battery operated alternatives
  • Have fire extinguishers or other means to help tackle any fire in the early stages

Their main message is to take extra care when dealing with candles.
