James Fenton

The Central Statistics Office has revealed the most common baby names in Ireland for 2016.

James has claimed the top spot for boys while Emily is the most common name for a girl for the sixth year running.

It is the first time in nine years that Jack didn’t finish top for boys. It did come second, however, with Daniel, Conor and Sean completing the top five.

After Emily, the list of top five girls names was completed by Grace, Ava, Lucy and Amelia.

Muhammad is the fastest-growing name for a boy in Ireland while the same honour for girls is shared between Willow and Matilda.
