An Irish student is fighting for his life after a vicious assault in the United States.

According to the Irish Mirror, Evan White from Cork was celebrating a friend's 21st birthday in San Diego when he was "beaten to a pulp" down a laneway.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A friend is quoted as saying:

"They said he is a terrible state. He was beaten to a pulp. He has injuries everywhere but particularly to his face.

"He has so many bones broken there, he is unrecognisable."

San Diego is a popular destination for Irish students traveling to America on J1 visas.
