Sarah

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and US President Donald Trump will speak today for the first time via telephone.

The Irish Times reports that The White House’s daily press schedule confirms Trump will talk to the “Prime Minister Leo Varadkar of Ireland” at 11.15am US Eastern Standard Time, which is 4.15pm Irish time.

A spokesman for Leo Varadkar said that Trump wishes to congratulate the new Taoiseach on his appointment.

Last week, Vardakar addressed law firm Arthur Cox’s LGBT+ network, and said that he was looking forward to the St Patrick’s Day visit to Washington DC.

“I do promise that if I have the chance to go to the White House in March to meet President Trump, while I won’t make any references to the West Wing,” he said.

“I will channel the spirit of President Bartlett and make some important points about equality and our responsibilities as global citizens.”

President Bartlett was a character in the US television drama serial, the West Wing.
