Met Éireann issues a Status Red alert for Cork and Kerry ahead of Storm Eunice

Katy Thornton

17:01 Update: Since publishing this article, Clare and Waterford have been added to the list of counties with a Status Red warning.

Looks like Storm Eunice is trying to one up one on Storm Dudley.

One storm has passed, but another is on the way. Storm Eunice looks to usurp her brother, forcing Met Éireann to issue a Status Red wind warning for Cork and Kerry. According to The Journal, a red warning “means the storm poses a risk to life and people are encouraged to stay at home in those counties“. Previously Cork and Kerry were apart of the list with a Status Orange warning, along with the rest of Munster, Dublin, Kilkenny, Wexford, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow, and Carlow. The rest of the country has a Status Yellow warning.

Met Éireann’s National Forecast for tonight reads as follows:

It will become stormy overnight in Munster, southeast Leinster and western counties with extremely strong southwest winds, becoming northwesterly with severe and damaging gusts. Risk of coastal flooding at high tide early on Friday morning.”

People who live in Cork and Kerry are urged to stay home tonight; driving conditions will be dangerous, and there’s a high chance of coastal flooding. According to Met Éireann, red weather warnings are rare, and indicate highly destructive weather.

Stay safe out there tonight. The red warning remains in place between 3am and 8am on Friday morning.
