300 of those notices were issued in the past fortnight.

More than 9,000 fixed charge notices have been issued to people found to be in breach of Covid-19 regulations according to Minister for Justice Helen McEntee.

Speaking to the Dáil, Minister McEntee said that the above figure also included 300 fines of €500, all issued to people on the basis of non-essential international travel in the past two weeks.

Urging the public to avoid travelling if at all possible, McEntee’s comments were made at a debate regarding the Health Amendment Bill and the introduction of mandatory quarantine for incoming travellers from 20 different ‘red list’ countries.

Commenting that it’s important to remember what an “extraordinary” measure it is, RTÉ reports that the Minister for Justice said that she believes the proposed amendment bill manages to balance both “the protection of public health and the constitutional freedoms which all legislation must respect”.

Meanwhile, speaking as to when the 5km exercise limit could be lifted, Taoiseach Micheál Martin indicated that the situation is due to be reviewed ahead of the Easter Weekend.
