AA Roadwatch Has Released A List Of Roads That Are “Extremely Dangerous” Today

Storm Emma is almost here and the Irish public has been advised to stay at home, especially between 4pm today and noon tomorrow. 

If you are forced to travel you should exercise extreme caution and leave an extra long distance between your car and the one in front of you. 

AA Roadwatch has been monitoring roads around the country, and updating its website at regular intervals. 

Here is a list of the most dangerous areas: 

– Monaghan: very heavy snowfall has resulted in treacherous conditions, especially in in Monaghan Town, Castleblayney and in Carrickmacross. The N2 is passable in Castleshane but Gardai are advising drivers to avoid it if possible.

– Cavan: there are very poor driving conditions across the county, especially in Virginia, Cavan Town and Bailieborough.

– Waterford: strong winds are adding to very difficult driving conditions and Garai are urging motorists to stay indoors. 

– Kilkenny: very bad driving conditions, with snow especially thick in Thomastown and Kilkenny City. 

– Kildare: conditions are icy and slippery around Leixlip, especially routes on higher ground, including Captain’s Hill.

– Offaly: roads in the Birr area are the worst affected due to heavy snowfall, leaving them very slippery. In Tullamore, secondary routes remain quite bad but main roads through the town are starting to clear. 

– Louth: snow showers are getting heavier in Drogheda. It remains bad around Dundalk with slush around town. There are reportedly poor conditions on the Old N1 (R132) between Julianstown and J7 Julianstown on the M1.

– Meath: conditions are very snowy in Ashbourne, particularly on secondary routes, and deteriorating in Navan and Trim. A number of lanes of the M1 are reportedly blocked with snow near the toll plaza between J7 Julianstown and J8 Duleek.

– Westmeath: a section of the N62 is closed between Ballinahown and Athlone to facilitate the removal of a jack-knifed truck from the road. A number of routes in Delvin are currently impassable following heavy snowfall. Avoid the N4 at Ballinalack as a number of vehicles have become stuck. 

– Dublin: The N82 is impassable near the N81 jct due to snow. 

The M1 is down to one lane northbound between J4 Donabate and J6 Balbriggan due to snow on the route. Traffic can use the left lane.

In Dundrum, driving conditions are reportedly quite icy, especially on Main St, Sandyford Rd and around Balally Luas stop. 

Gardaí in both Clondalkin and Lucan are report icy and slippery conditions on routes around the areas due to compacted snow.

Laois: the Mountrath/Birr Rd (R440) is closed between Mountrath and Kinitty due to icy conditions.

– Kildare: the M7 is reportedly down to one lane southbound between J7 Kill and J14 Monasterevin with snow showers affecting visibility.
