In the latest development in the shocking Tuam scandal, where hundreds of human remains of children and babies were recently discovered, it has been announced that there will not be a criminal investigation into the discovery.

According to the Department of Justice, no evidence of suspicious deaths has so far been uncovered at the former Tuam Mother and Baby Home site.

In a statement to the Galway Independent, the Department said that “at this point, the Commission’s investigations in Tuam has found no evidence of suspicious deaths. No criminal investigation is underway.”

Gardai are continuing to liase with the Coroner’s Office, with a spokesperson saying that “a critical part of the role of a coroner is to determine as far as possible, the cause of a death reportable to him by law, particularly in the case of deaths that may have occurred in a violent or unnatural manner.”
