The Pro-Life campaign has conceded to losing the referendum by what is so far a landslide victory for repeal.
Poll results released throughout the day are showing around 70% in favour of repealing Ireland’s Eighth Amendment.
John McGuirk, communications director for the “Save the 8th” campaign told RTE that the people of Ireland “weighed it in the balance and it came down on one side. I obviously would have preferred if they had come down on the other,”
“There is no prospect of the (abortion rights) legislation not being passed,” he added.
In a tweet posted by McGuirk last night, he also said that “with a result of that magnitude, clearly there was very little to be done.”
The 8th did not create an unborn child’s right to life – it merely acknowledged it. The right exists, independent of what a majority says. That said, with a result of that magnitude, clearly there was very little to be done. Thank you to every NO voter and campaigner. #8thref
