RTÉ Forced To Apologise Over This Comment On Their Programme

Darragh Berry

The Limerick Leader is reporting that RTÉ has been forced to apology over comments made in 2017 by a Sinn Fein TD to Limerick politician, Willie O’Dea.

On a Saturday broadcast on RTÉ Radio One, Sinn Féin Matt Carthy stated allegedly that O’Dea was a “perjurer”.

The Claire Byrne hosted show was made up of Carthy and O’Dea who appeared on a live discussion panel on October 21, 2017.

RTÉ confirmed that an apology was made after the RTE Radio One’s Marian Finucane programme on Saturday afternoon.

The comments were made surrounding a controversy in 2010 where O’Dea resigned from his position as Minister For Defence after he had wrongly linked a fellow TD to a brothel.

In the apology, RTÉ said that:

“On this programme on October 21, 2017, a guest stated that the Fianna Fáil TD for Limerick City, Willie O’Dea, had been found to have perjured himself.

“RTÉ accepts that this statement was false and was an unfair attack on his reputation.

“RTÉ accepts that at no stage was Willie O’Dea ever found to have perjured himself and apologises to him for the distress that this publication caused.”
