Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine has been granted approval for use in the European Union.
The European Medicines Agency has given approval for the Johnson & Johnson one shot Covid-19 vaccine to be used within the European Union.
The fourth vaccine to be endorsed for use in the EU, its approval follows that of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines.
So far, Johnson & Johnson has committed to delivering 200million doses of its vaccine to the EU this year – with 600,000 of that number expected to be delivered to Ireland between April and June.
Promising to be a ‘gamechanger’ in helping the country reach its proposed vaccination goal, governments have been eagerly awaiting its approval with Taoiseach Micheál Martin amongst those to have celebrated the news.
“Welcome news that the EMA have recommended use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine today. Every weapon in the fight against #COVID19 is good news for our people, our health service and all of society.”
Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast this morning, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar confirmed that, despite delays, the plan is still to have offered the vaccine to all adults by the end of September.
