Sinn Fein’s leader in Northern Ireland, Michelle O’Neill has called for a referendum on Northern Ireland splitting from the United Kingdom, Reuters are reporting.
O’Neill told reporters:
“Brexit will be a disaster for the economy, and a disaster for the people of Ireland. A referendum on Irish unity has to happen as soon a possible.”
In last year’s Brexit referendum, 56% of Northern Irish voters opted to remain in the European Union. Brexit is set to have a huge impact on the Northern Irish economy leading to some calling for a United Ireland and plans being put in place for the potential passing of such a motion.
