The Irish Times is reporting that Liadh Ní Riada has been selected as the Sinn Fein candidate to
contest the Presidential election next month.
The Ireland South MEP was one of two people considered by the party.
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, TD for Cavan-Monaghan, was also considered as a potential candidate, but Ó Caoláin said he wasn’t interested in running.
Ní Riada was elected as an MEP for Ireland South in 2014.
She will join President Higgins, Sean Gallagher, Joan Freeman and Gavin Duffy on the ballot paper.
As the incumbent, President Higgins was able to nominate himself for a chance at a second term.
The other three had to secure nominations from four local councils.
Other hopefuls have yet to secure the required amount of support.
The election is due to take place on October 26th.
