Here’s Everthing You Need To Know About The Ireland Match Today

James Fenton

Who are we playing against?

The Boys In Green will take to the pitch this evening against South American visitors in the form of Uruguay.

Uruguay. Are they the ones with the bitey guy?

If you’re referring to serial chomper Luis Suarez then yes. The Barcelona man has been punished for biting opponents not once, not twice, but three times throughout his career.

Fortunately for the Irish players, he’s unlikely to feature today due to injury so they should be safe from being on Suarez’s lunch menu.

Thank God for that. Is this an important game then?

In a sense, yes. While it is officially a friendly, all eyes are on the crucial Word Cup qualifier against Austria next Sunday.

Uruguay provide the final opportunity for manager Martin O’Neill to try out new tactics, players and formations ahead of a match that will be pivotal if Ireland want to secure qualification for Russia 2018.

What time is kick-off?

The match gets underway at 6pm at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. If you’re not going, it sounds like prime pub time of a Bank Holiday Sunday to us.

Good idea but I’m actually half thinking of heading along. Is the match sold out?

Nah, you’ll find that friendly matches generally don’t sell out. You should still be able to get some on Ticketmaster or even outside the ground.

Yes.
