John Egan credits GAA after scoring first Premier League goal

James Fenton

Ireland defender John Egan scored his first ever Premier League goal yesterday and declared he hadn’t hit a shot like it since his Gaelic football days.

John Egan brought joy to Sheffield United fans by scoring a late goal to rescue a 1-1 draw away to Burnley but the nature of his finish brought praise from a much wider audience.

The back-post half volley won Egan plenty of praise on Twitter as well as among television pundits and while being interviewed by his club after the game, the Corkman said: “When I used to play Gaelic football was probably the last time I hit one like that,” adding “I timed the run nicely and it was a nice finish.”

Egan has never made any secret of his love for the GAA and it’s no surprise given that his late father John Senior won six All-Ireland’s for Kerry and is immortalised in a statue in his native Sneem.

In fact, one Twitter user recognised the similarities by putting commentary of a goal by John Senior to his son’s strike yesterday and you can check it out below…

Brilliant stuff. Let’s hope Egan Junior keeps his goalscoring form going when Ireland are back in action.
