A huge step for a national sporting treasure

She is one of the most successful and loved athletes in Irish history and she has managed to do all that as an amateur boxer.

Today though, reports have surfaced that Katie Taylor is set to turn professional and sign a deal with the promoter Eddie Hearn that would see her fighting in London next month.

The move comes after a disappointing Olympics by her own standards this summer but Irish fans will remember her amateur career for all the right reasons, including the gold medals, if she does turn professional.

According to The Irish Times, nothing is signed yet but a deal looks likely. Confirmation this evening that Taylor will not compete at the European Championships next month has also added fuel to the fire.

Whatever she chooses to do, the whole island of Ireland will always be behind her.
